Industry+ and lighting establishment Sol Luminaire come together to present ‘Designers & Crafters Edition 01’ at Galerie 5. A homage to Singapore’s designers and crafters, the showcase spotlights collectible design art objects that have been created through passionate, experimental approaches across disciplines. These designers and crafters are continuously exploring beyond the boundaries, and could shape the landscape of the future of Singapore’s design art.

Designers & Crafters Edition 01 opens from Singapore’s birthday month of August and will be on view until Singapore Design Week in September.

Do aliens have pronouns? Japanese artist Simon expresses a universal freedom from stereotypes through a series of ‘super cute’ aliens. His characters carry a punk spirit that defies trend, and a desire to heal those who have been marginalized by society.

Curated by Yoichi Nakamuta (Clear Gallery Tokyo) and P.C. Ee (Industry+).

The works I draw are neither male nor female.
It is a mixture of femininity and masculinity within me.

They were born with an awareness of the destruction of stereotypes.
Knowledge that comes from some assumptions and people’s experiences.
Freedom of ideas and freedom from restrictions.

No one can predict the future.
In such a place, they feel the strong life force and the mystique of life that lives today and tomorrow.

I want to fight against my self-confidence in this world where the times are changing so fast.
A punk spirit that defies the trends of the world.
A feeling that can only come from within me, a feeling that I do not draw with my head but with my whole body.

Cute and destructive – and the healing of the heart that lies beyond that.
The senses become irresistible and destroy the brain with cuteness.
And I want to heal people all over the world, transcending language barriers.

Viewport Studio set out to dramatically reduce the energy and resources required for producing furniture, while still creating enduring pieces that will be loved and used in everyday life. The result is Essential, a furniture range that has been sourced, developed, and manufactured from discarded timber within a 10 mile radius of its production location.

This collection questions the existing production cycle of commercial furniture and redefines what is essential to design, produce, consume and use at home. Essential merges responsible material sourcing, critical design thinking and key manufacturing, to create beautiful furniture for daily use.
